A JERSEY GIRL’S HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME 2016

Someone I once knew used to always say, “If I didn’t have bad luck~ I wouldn’t have luck at all!”.

Well~ that’s almost the way I felt yesterday morning, even though I’d hoped~ several weeks earlier, that the 24th would at least be a pretty-good day (all things considered). So, what happened? My doctor’s office had scheduled me to undergo a battery of tests at the hospital yesterday morning at 10 AM. And so it was, the fasting & no water orders from midnight the previous evening.

I tossed & turned all night and when I woke up at 5:30 in the morning with cotton-mouth and a rumbling stomach, I felt absolutely miserable! If that didn’t beat all, my husband greeted me with a cheerful, “Good Morning, Hap..” I cut him off mid-sentence & snapped back, “What’s so good about it!?” (Poor guy. Too bad. He should know me better after over 31 years!)

Regardless of the fact that I couldn’t even have my customary one & only cup of coffee of the day, I managed, albeit reluctantly~ to keep my appointment with the doctor at the hospital. Irritated, I was in rare form yesterday morning and even managed to ask my doctor why he grew a beard and insult him by telling him he looked like a Terrorist! (Obviously, this was not a great idea, but what the hell!)

Indeed, just before drifting off to sleep, I remember mumbling something like, “Don’t shave my hair off while I’m sleeping. I had a haircut on Tuesday!”, or words to that effect. Thankfully, I eventually woke up with all my hair intact and an hour later was allowed to have some apple juice & crackers. My doctor gave me a thumbs up, but reminded me that he’d be in touch after my MRI scheduled for this coming Monday. Oh, and by the way, he said, “No driving & NO Alcohol for the next few days!”.

Yikes!

On the way home, I pointed out the White Castle on Route 9 in Freehold and demanded my husband, Luke to  pull in there! It was the one thing that had happened that day thus far that I had been in control of! “I ordered two Murder-Burgers and some Fatal Fries”! They were absolutely delicious!

A HEARTFELT THANK-YOU TO ALL MY FAMILY & FRIENDS for Your Happy Birthday Wishes. Yesterday (June 24, 2016) was the 33rd anniversary of my 29th Birthday! Your greetings & wishes ALL made my day because at the end of the day~ it was the brightest part of the day! Thanks again & God Bless You ALL!

A PERSONAL NOTE TO MY DADDY ON FATHER’S DAY

Our fathers carry half of our genetic makeup and our relationship with our fathers play such a huge part of who we will become as adults. In many segments of society, people grow up without ever knowing their fathers. This is unfortunate because all fathers should play as important a role in raising their children as do their mothers. A father is the model of a man for his daughter~ and because of that, he is the ideal that she will model her future relationships after in her search for her future mate. She will inevitably choose a man who is very much like her father. A father is also the model for his son as well. However, since I was a “daddy’s little girl”, I’ll let my brother come up with his own opinion. This one is mine.

Despite many unforeseen circumstances and in spite of his being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease just before I was born, my father never complained about his progressing and incurable disability. Indeed, in many ways I believe it made him stronger.

As a child and young teenager, my father taught me about movies, baseball, carpentry and cars. He taught me how to fry bacon and eggs, how to throw a baseball & hit one out of the park. He watched closely while he instructed me in changing out electrical outlets, the proper use his power tools as well as how to miter wood & swing a hammer. By the mid-late 1960’s I knew how to do all the ‘male-dominated’ chores around the house including cutting the grass. And~ until this day, I can tell you the make and model year of any car built between 1930 – 1985! Through the years, the lessons I learned from my father gave me the courage to eventually serve in the military and courageously stand up for myself against life’s challenges and any adversity I faced.  Thank you, Daddy. I miss you very much. Happy Father’s Day! Love Always~ your little ‘Mooch’

He wasn’t a hero~

Known by the world.

But a hero he was~

To his little girl.

FATHER’S DAY TRIVIA

In the year 1910 on July 19, it was said that the Governor of Washington state declared the first ‘Father’s Day’. The day of celebration for fathers did not meet the same height of enthusiasm as mother’s day because supposedly a father did not have an equal amount of sentimental value. It was not until July 5, 1908 in a West Virginia church that the very first celebrated, sponsored event for fathers took place. The sermon that very day was held and centered on the 362 fallen men that lost their lives in explosions that took place in the Fairmount Coal Company mines. This event, however, was only a one day thing and not the annual holiday that many know of today.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FATHER’S DAY: A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd had her place in the history of father’s day. As one of six children raised by a widow, she tried to create a day that would be an official day just like mother’s day for the counterparts to female parents. She wished to create this day in honor of her farther. It was said that Dodd went all over to places such as churches and the YMCA to gather some type of support for this thought. She was met with success as Washington then celebrated Father’s Day as a national holiday. However, despite Dodd’s effort and success of obtaining the male version of Mother’s Day, many men were seen to not partake in such a thing as they felt it somehow toned down their manliness with gift giving. In fact, most men back in that time scoffed at the very existence of the holiday.

Father’s Day took its place in history in 1966. President Lyndon Johnson made Father’s Day into the national holiday that is now as popular as Mother’s Day. Today, the holiday is met with an equal amount of love and affection, gift-giving, and bonding as seen on Mother’s Day. This day is the one of the largest card sending days of the year where about 87 million cards are given. Most of these cards come from the wives and daughters of the families. Sons are sometimes seen fishing with their fathers on this day. Other activities involve barbecues and family bonding.

The importance of Father’s Day from back in history to the present day is to help bring acknowledgement to the roles that father’s play within society and in families. The celebration, much like Mother’s Day, also gives children the opportunity to show just how much they love and respect their fathers. This is said to assist with strengthening the initial bond shared by father and child. Father’s Day is just around the corner now. The celebration and the honoring of those dads still here or that have passed away will be felt by many around the globe.

Your Mother Is Always With You

Mom & Dorian 1957

Mommy & Me 1957

Your mother is always with you…

She’s the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street.

She’s the smell of bleach in your freshly laundered socks.

She’s the cool hand on your brow when you’re not well.

Your mother lives inside your laughter.

She’s crystallized in every tear drop…

She’s the place you came from, your first home…

She’s the map you follow with every step that you take.

She’s your first love and your first heart-break…

and nothing on earth can separate you.

Not time, Not space… Not even death….

will ever separate you from your mother….

You carry her inside of you….

THE HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY

combined-poppies-800

IN FLANDERS FIELDS by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

THE HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY ~ by Dorian F. Howard© (Jersey Girl & U.S. Navy Veteran)

Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the thDG2GUUZ6Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. It started as an event to honor Union soldiers, who had died during the American Civil War and was declared that Decoration Day should be observed yearly on May 30th. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. The current name for this day, Memorial Day, did not come into use until after World War II. The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery,** across the Potomac from Washington DC.  The ceremonies centered around…

THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

dfhPINUPMy goal for 2016 was to lose 10 pounds. Only 15 to go.

Ate a salad for dinner last night! Mostly croutons & tomatoes. Really, it was just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce. And cheese. Okay, FINE. I ate a pizza!

Here’s a great recipe for Tofu:
1. Throw it in the trash.
2. Grill some Meat!

I just did a week’s worth of cardio by walking into a spider web!

I don’t mean to brag but~ I finished my 14-day diet in 3 hours and 20 minutes!

A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it!

Kids today don’t know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

Senility has been a smooth transition for me.

Remember back when we were kids and every time it was below zero out they closed the schools? Me neither!

I may not be that funny or good-looking or smart or talented …. I forgot where I was going with this.

A thief broke into my house last night. He started searching for money, so I decided to search with him.

My dentist told me I needed a crown. I was like; I KNOW! Right?

I love being over 50. I learn something new every day~ and forget 5 others!

Indeed, I think I’ll just put an ‘Out of Order’ sticker on my head & call it a day!

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE ‘GOOD OLD’ USA?

I don’t get it!

The United States of America is a Republic; (re·pub·lic; noun \ri-ˈpə-blik\: a country that is governed by elected representatives and by an elected leader, such as a president rather than by a king or queen) and our founders intended that we be governed as a democracy, (de·moc·ra·cy  noun \di-ˈmä-krə-sē\:  a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting~ for a government by the people; especially: rule of the majority; a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections).

So why is it that our current elected officials appear and act as if they care more about themselves, their careers & political correctness than they seem to do about WE, the People? We, those very people that elected them into office? America was founded by revolutionaries who had a dream of independence, a longing for personal & religious freedom. Our forefathers were visionaries, certainly they were men of their times and flawed as ALL human beings are, but they had a vision and for over 200 years that vision was grown & nurtured by the American people. Indeed; America was built by men who had entrepreneurial imagination as well as on the integrity and ingenuity of its people and the independent spirit, hard work and longing for the ‘American Dream’ of our immigrant ancestors.

On April 17, 1913 the balance of power in United States shifted from the states to the central government with the illegal ratification of the 17th Amendment to our Constitution. Without the ‘voice’ of the States,  that single amendment effectively stifled state’s rights and in 1933 the federal government under FDR began the systematic destruction of the Constitution of the United States. Today, the last vestiges of freedom remain tethered to the Bill of Rights by a thin, raveled thread.

When a government becomes so powerful that citizens become the servant, and government officials become the master and overlord it is no longer the country the Founding Fathers intended.

Considering all the candidates running for office this year, vote as you will in November, but please be advised, that if any American doesn’t vote out of spite~ it may be the last free-election they may ever have the choice or  privilege to vote in. The Politically Correct  left & radical liberals just may finally realize their dream of a Socialist States of America!

I pulled the following Letter to the Editor from my Twitter feed and thought that the writer, Ken Huber really has his pulse on the thoughts of many Americans. Thank you, Ken. In my opinion~ you are the voice of the silent majority!~ JGT

A Rock & Unemployment in America

Liberty and Justice for AllUnless you’ve been living under a rock for the past several years, you must be aware that the number of Americans out of work, according to the News media, has risen to 94 million people without a job. The News media has also reported that the United States unemployment rate is at about 5%.

  • **Unquestionably, they get their information from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
  • **Undoubtedly that bureau falls under the U.S Department of Labor.
  • **Undeniably the U. S. Department of Labor falls under the yoke of the Obama Administration.

Most Americans are intelligent enough to realize that these figures include part-time workers and exclude those people that have exhausted their unemployment benefits and have subsequently dropped out of the workforce. Many are married women. Many have reached early retirement age and have opted to collect their Social Security Benefits. Some may return to the job market. Many will not. Many have simply given up.

Putting all the political bullshit aside, the true US unemployment rate is more like 60%. That means that only about 40 % of Americans are still working in the job force. That also means that those individuals lucky enough to still be employed, are paying the bulk of federal & state taxes, healthcare, supporting their families etc. They are also paying for government subsidies for the underemployed, including; subsided housing, food stamps, education as well as medical care for the working poor & illegal aliens living in America!

Over seven years into the Obama presidency, it’s safe to say the most valuable thing his voters ever got for their votes were the free bumper stickers & Obama phones. America, however~ got fucked! ~ JGT

Is It Progression or Regression? ~ You Decide

Did you know that after 50 people who read the same 28 page short story and that  it was a 50/50 split as to who remembered what?  Half the group (25) read a Kindle e-reader version of the story & the other half (25) read a paper copy of the same story. The results are mindboggling? The readers of the digital  version could not remember details, including characters or the plot of the story as well as the readers of the paper book copy could. However; those 25 people remembered details AND the plot of the short story.

Why is this important? I’ll tell you, why this IS important!

The digital version (Kindle) does not provide as much mental reconstruction of the short story as well as the paper version because  when we human beings use our ‘sense of touch’ as we do when turning paper pages, the left side of a book keeps growing as we read on in anticipation of discovery as well as in anticipation of completing the book.~JGT
